Not much to report!

Not much happened today, and I *extremely disappointingly* have no pictures. I’m a little ashamed to post this actually. I almost don’t want to post anything for lack of interest, but I have that agreement with Kellen, hahaha. Well, today was my first day of class! Danish… again. Man, the books here are so freakin’ expensive. Sigh. Ah well, books at Penn are ridiculously expensive too, so I ought not to pretend I’m surprised. Most people in my Danish class are from Germany which is unfortunate for me because they’re much better at picking up Danish (the languages are similar-ish. Not… *really* similar, but the vocab has some similarities. And the construction.)

Tomorrow I’m either going to Malmo (Sweden) as it is close, or the beach (as I’d originally planned), or I will go do admin stuff like get my CPR number (it’s like an SSN here I guess) and my student ID and my metro pass and such. I don’t know, it’s kind of a toss up, we’ll see. Malmo sounds really cool and logically it’s the very best option but I don’t particularly *feel* like it ya know? Oh well, no matter what I do, no biggie, at least I have something to do! … Great, no one cares, haha.

Well, hopefully I’ll have a better post tomorrow. 🙂

Sleep. Eat. Repeat.

That’s what I did today! Still totally eating way too much food.. my b. Liver most def confirmed Danish as of yesterday, when we had our “formal dinner.” The food was an awesome buffet but there was only one dessert (?? :() and it was nooooot good (“orange cake with cream cheese, blackberries, and chocolate chips” — everything but the kitchen sink!) and we had to pay for every drink (INCLUDING water.) Thankfully I live just above the canteen so I just ran back upstairs to fill up on liquids 🙂 Hooray for the cheap!

Funny story for you: so I bit the bullet and bought a bottle of Captain Morgan’s, and of course I put it in the freezer (because liquor doesn’t freeze) — FALSE!!! IT FROZE!!! I didn’t know it was possible! The fridge is a monster fridge, clearly.

We were forced to arrive between 6 and 7 and food wasn't served til 8 so I was really hungry and munched down on pretzel sticks and peanuts. The flash made the pretzel stick cup kinda disappear, cool right?

Unrelatedly, I went to Fotex (the supermarket) in sweats yesterday and I was so freakin’ conspicuous! Haha. Nobody here dresses in such a shabby manner.. Trousers, jeans, leggings, or shorts/skirt with hose only.

You hold my hands down…

I’ve.. been.. bad.. I’VE BEEN BAD! [/metric — monster hospital]

It was a fitting quotation, what can I say. Reasons why I suck:

1) I am lagging with the posts ever so slightly. Forgive? I’ve been coughing up a lung and a half… I didn’t sleep for more than a consecutive hour last night cause I woke up a-hacking… Forgive? K pointed out that my once painfully sharp tone of voice has now become rather demure (whoa! impossible!) and whiny (yep, same old. Some things never change.)

2) I can’t stop inhaling everything I see ugh.

Pictures of the dumplings I made from last post:

Today I went to Frederiksberg Centret shopping centre and walked around. I bought a skirt from H&M and walked around!

Most epic pastry ever! The sign lies it was 36 DKK (ouch -- $7+ USD) but I just HAD to get one. It was seriously two feet long and glazed with tons of chocolate icing among other things.

Today’s mission:

1) Procure metro pass: I was going to get a metro pass but I didn’t have enough cash, oops. Failing that…

2) FIND THE ASIAN SHOP!

Well I trooped all around Central Station in search of the Asian shop.. Might as well take a pic.

China To(w)n! I HAVE ARRIVED! It's "behind the central station" and I managed to walk around the entire perimeter (it's Huge -- that's not what she said) before I found the right side. Sigh. SIGH. And everything in here is so expensive too! (e.g. Bag of dumplings = $30+ USD wtf! Lee Kum Kee Chiu Chow Chilli Oil (the only acceptable kind!) = just under $6 USD)

Tomorrow I will be buying more ground pork and such to make more dumplings so I can drown in overpriced chilli oil and black vinegar!!! Win!

I long for Asia

So yesterday I was killing time in my room as usual and I realized that it was absolutely ridiculous I’ve eaten no Asian food and that I absolutely had to have dumplings but I was too lazy to go to one of the only Asian shops in Copenhagen (that, and I don’t even know if they carry dumplings, having never been.) In my desperation I bought flour to make the wrappers (so so glad I roomed with Kellen because she showed me how!). I still need to find chilli oil and black and red vinegar somewhere.. prob at the Asian shop. I neeeed it for when I boil my dumplings! Anyhoo..

The glorious scent of pork and scallion filled my nostrils. Look at my handmade dumpling! Haha.

The glorious scent of pork and scallion filled my nostrils. Look at my handmade dumpling! Haha. Btdub.. note the chopstick! I have no rolling pin.

Danish scallions are expensive.. 1.25 US per bunch, but the scallions themselves are massive, at least the size of two normal scallions! I LOVE SCALLIONS. I skimped out on buying them earlier but man.. it smells so good. I boiled a bunch of them and pan fried a bunch of the dumplings. Yum yum yum yum yum. It’s much better pan fried because I have no chilli oil or vinegar. And for some reason the dumplings release some juice inside so it’s all juicy and crispy simultaneously.

Waiting to go out.. yep

The bar.. yes..

The bar.. yes..

So T and I waited at the bar near us for half an hour for K, V, and SB but they never came!!! Turns out K said he was going to Vega (the club) or so he claims but I don’t believe he did and so we had no idea..! Horrible. Why would they go without us 😦 haha.

T and I split a ten shot special. We don't really know what they are but from left to right: mango, fruity? (tasted like cough syrup, horrors!), licorice, fisk (it's like liquid fisherman's friend.. it's very minty so it cools instead of burns), and better licorice.

So T and I walked all the way to Vega for like 45 minutes because the buses didn't run frequently enough and we didn't want to cab and we got there and we were like... Omg that's it?! We were expecting something epic and spectacular. Sigh. Vega, you have let us down!

Also K felt so bad that he got a Corona for me yay! So, all is forgiven. T and I craved McD’s so bad but the ones here close kind of early so I instead worked on my brick of cheese. Mmm havarti… I don’t have any kartoffelsalat (potato salad) left I tank through that hahaha. Also I just looked at my arm and I have a cut on it.. wtf? Yep. I got up at 8am this morning to write this post! So, C, I hope you enjoy reading this at work!

Små Blå…

… is the most delicious thing Ever.

So yesterday was “buddy dinner” where my buddy and a couple others made a Ton of lasagna. No, seriously, there was so much it was ridiculous. And I kind of miss eating real food so I ate 3.5 squares of lasagna (which is just over half a pan.) Oops. Fattehhhh. And a lot of chips. Which is good, because it cushioned my stomach for all the liquor coming after it (not entirely by choice, it’s evidently very Danish to drink a lot.) Aside from the part where my Danish diet is now epic fail and I am well on my way to junior-fifteen-ing. And I learned a dice game called 30 which, again, involves drinking. Do you spot a common theme? Haha. Well, I wanted to go home at around 1230 or 130 or so, and there’s this guy P who lives in my res so we were going to go home together, and the entire time he was like don’t worry the metro is close, and then at 330 a Dane (his name is Hans Christian! How very Danish) was leaving and I was like ok this is ridiculous I am going home. And P didn’t end up going home anyway so I could’ve left earlier. Sigh. Well, HC walked me to the metro, since he lived nearby, and then he biked home. I, on the other hand, spent forever in transit because the freaking metro never comes late at night and I had to transfer and.. blah. So it took me 30+ minutes to get home instead of like.. 15.

Look, it's me! In the reflection! Dangling on the metal bar thing! There aren't any seats in the metro station itself, which sucks when you have to wait for 17 minutes. On a side note, the bars in the train itself are impossibly tall, I have to do some serious tippy toe-ing just to grab it (and not securely either!) I am jealous of the consistently tall and beautiful Danish folk.

I'm bored, I shall therefore camho! It seemed appropriate to document my sad self sitting alone in the metro.

Yes.. it was indeed 3:30+, I exaggerate not. This is while waiting for the train.. yep. Not fun. Nothing better to look at.

Also, lesson from the Danes: I am in fact correct in pronouncing it Co-pen-hay-gen (which is English, in Danish it’s pronounced co-pen-haun.. ish), so all of you people who are trying to sound pretentious and European by saying Co-pen-haaaah-gen, HAH!

PS: In retrospect I seriously regret not taking pictures of the lasagna. It was so good and filling and hot and … ahhh!

Queen of the castle

Today I went to Helsingør/Elsinore aka Hamlet’s castle! I slept for just under 3 hours so I wasn’t going to go, but I figured, oh what the heck, how many times am I going to see a castle anyway. So I saw it for bragging rights, and not much else, I must admit.

Look it's folded!!! It's insane! Wonder how that happened.

IMG_0234Ok sorry folks.. I’d write a description for each but I’ve had less than 3 hours of sleep and it’s almost 4am already. Forgive? A picture’s worth a thousand words I hear, anyway. 🙂 I might go back and write explanations but I probably won’t so if you have any questions holla at yo girlll.

HAH! I actually came back to it. Well last night T and I went out for the orientation night event. We pregamed (not nearly enough!!!) with some Heinekens which is cheap cheap cheap here — $5 for a sixpack. It just so happened every person who sat near us on the bus was Canadian, so three (Queens and UBC) and I met a very nice girl C. T and I met C’s friends and some random girl from California (who by the way defies every Californian stereotype — she’s not blonde, and she seems very sharp/snappy in a good way, like.. intelligent and not easily ruffled — a very impressive person overall and in fact a little intimidating!) So I thought the place we were going to was a bar but it was actually a club.. The name Park Cafe is very deceiving. Seriously… wtf? It was also really really far from the metro. Gah. Beers here were expensive but not as expensive as Club Mambo ($7 versus $8) and I got two of those because their mixed drinks (T got a screwdriver once) are WEAK! They pour exactly 1 oz using a gun and top it off with a lot of juice. I saw them make a gin and tonic that way too… Gin to tonic ratio was like … 10 to 90. It was obscene. I asked for a Long Island in the hopes of getting more bang for my buck but the lady was like, “I don’t make those.” Sigh. I think she makes drinks with only one liquor and one mixer, and she seemed new because she was really really inefficient and bad with the money compared to the other bartenders. K and V went to McDonald’s and when T and I heard it closed at 1 we really wanted to go too (T is going to be the death of me, I swear, we both crave food at any and all times and end up enabling each other) but the security guard wouldn’t let us! But K and V just breezed right in after! Unfair!! K and V left shortly after that, as did SB. Anyway, music was mostly good, except it had that dreaded inevitable hour-or-so period where the music just HAD to suck and T and I wanted to leave on a positive note! Well… Right when we gave up and were about to leave they played a song we liked so of course we had to go back… Then we finally left and we were asking instructions (here’s where the not-close-to-metro thing really kicks us in the seat of our pants) for the bus when we missed it! Nooooooo! So we were waiting for a bus in the cold and it took FOREVER (I really do mean forever.) Finally I started asking cabbies that passed how much it would cost to get to the metro. I was told 50-60, then 75, then a whopping 100 kroners! But finally there was a guy who said 60 or 70 and we convinced him to flat rate us for 60 (which is 12 bucks). Why? Well, I did some math in my head, and it wasn’t that much more expensive, because we’d run out of the discounted fare ticket (it’s called a clip card.. klippekort.. you buy ten fares at once and save 40%) so we’d have to pay 21 crowns cash fare for the bus and metro. Otherwise, we’d be paying 15 + 13 crowns for cab and metro (at the clip card rate, you can buy clip cards at the metro) and that’s 28 crowns, hardly much of a difference and very worth it. I got home a little faster, and I really wanted to go home, hahaha. I feel bad for the bussing folk, I think they walked to the next stop out of boredom or something.

Weekenden

Hallway of my school.. Not related to anything but I found it and uploaded it. Bite me.

Hallway of my school.. Not related to anything but I found it and uploaded it. Bite me.

Well the veeken’en has rolled around…! Last night I finally went out for the first time in Copenhagen (unlike everyone else here, haha, everyone else has gone out every night. But hey. I’m broke.)

So yeah, I’ve been pretty antisocial so far because I didn’t want to pay for the evening program for this week (there’s another one next week with triple the people) so… I just hung out in my room. But then my poor hallmate T wasn’t feeling well so she let me go to the party instead of her! 🙂 Yay! Minor setback: I’d been losering in my room so I didn’t know anyone in my building really hahaha. My friends were very limited already and none of them lived in my building (except T obvs.) So… I went to the common room to meet my building-mates who were very nice. There were a couple Canadian girls, a couple Spanish girls, and a whole bunch of European guys (countries forgotten), and a guy from Penn, as well as Aussie Girl (AG). My friend K met up with us (I think there were 12 of us) at Porcelaenshaven (my dorm) and off we went! While at the metro AG didn’t manage to get on the train because she was having some issues with the ticket machine so we met her at the next stop.

K: “Uhh should we go back and get her? She looked pretty drunk..”
Me: “No way! She didn’t have much to drink!”

Whoooooooops. More about AG later. We got off at Norreport and took the bus from there to Club Mambo. AG didn’t really go in on account of her drunkenness but she did put her arms around K from behind and rested her head on his back. HAHA! Poor girl… and poor K. AG had latched onto another guy, E, before, and another guy, N (“She started reaching down my jeans and it was like ok, off you go”) and it was now K’s turn!

K: “Why didn’t you save me it was so awkward?!”
P: “… No it was funny.”

I’m a little horrible. But to compensate I gave him my free drink ticket which was redeemable for an $8USD beer! I then met up with my friend V.

So… Club Mambo at first had typical club music and then suddenly it switched into latin music! Uhhhhoh. Because I can really do that. So Swiss Boy (SB — V’s friend) tried to teach me how to salsa but I am so, so epic fail. Whoooops. We gave up and relocated to the other room which played familiar-er music (Calle Ocho anyone? Only problem — they played it like freaking four times that night ugh.) Except that room was deathly hot so we relocated outside but not before I met my friend North Carolina Boy (NCB) who I’d actually met earlier this week but he forgot so he compensated with a beer hooray! (Dude, can people forget my name all the time? That would be awesome.) NCB and I tried to figure out some other latin dance or other with the help from A, a Mexican dude from my Danish crash course class. He taught us a lot, but I still sucked. Also, I need a wristlet, a clutch kind of requires you to have hands and … yeah, you don’t really have hands when you try to do latin dancing, and my elbows are unfortunately unequipped with grips of steel.

I was here the other day! But yeah, I came back here last night. This is near Club Mambo.

We were going to go to a karaoke bar but then we didn’t (phew, good thing) so then I went home and slept really late because people keep distracting me!

I met a ton of people at Club Mambo though so I’m really glad I went even though originally I wasn’t going to. It was a lot of fun and I met a lot of people. (That is the dumbest most cliche sentence ever. Sorry. Forgive?) I met a bunch of sweet Korean girls as well as a group of Singaporeans too so yeah, lots of international kids.

Time to go to IKEA… Will update later.

Værsgo!

Yeah I’m kind of tired cause it’s kind of late but I promised changolangolang I’d do an entry so. YOU OWE ME ONE!!! Alright soooo… Tomorrow’s my last Danish class. I’ve learned quite a bit — but the pronunciation still freaks me out hahaha. Hvordan går det? Det går fint! … anyway.

So finally the guy was like how about we do sugar and cinnamon AND ice cream? And I was like YESSSSS. So.. he rolled up the crepe and put the soft serve in it. Also soft serve in Denmark is much creamier and far less sweet. I dripped a lot of ice cream everywhere though, oops. I knew I should've worn my white pants.

Let me count the ways.

1. You’ve been with me for five years and still going strong.

2. You’re super compact and great for travel.

3. You’re powerful! You blow me away every time 😉 cheesy pun intended.

4. YOU’RE DUAL VOLTAGE SINCE WHEN!? LOVE!!!

Well… Anyway. So today I went to an awesome park with extremely tall trees (no, seriously, it looked strange because they were so tall) that also doubles as a cemetary (eek) for very famous old people — ones I saw included Hans Christian Andersen and Niels Bohr! Wish I took a picture but.. I didn’t. I’m sure I’ll be back. I didn’t whip out my camera until a while later in Norreport. I had lunch there, I should have taken a pic of the smorrebrod (I don’t know how to type with fancy Danish accents sorry). There were three — one with pickled herring (yuck. At least I tried it.), one with some sort of cured meat, and one with … yet another type of cured meat. The portions are very small, I foresee imminent weight loss unless it is offset by beer (which is definitely, definitely the drink of choice here.)

Finally whipped out my camera after missing out earlier. In the main city area!

Bubbles in bubbles! Well, they are plastic bubbles, but they are cute nonetheless. Inside them were innovative ways people were recycling things (e.g. in toys, for housing, etc.)

The train. Reminds me of HK -- there's glass to prevent suicide jumpers. Train is remarkably affordable -- $2.40 US per trip for unlimited travel for an hour within 2 zones (in the city.) So I could conceivably go out for groceries and come back too, at that price. Apparently the train runs 24 hours (yay!) and the train came every 2 minutes (there's an electronic board with train times) on a Sunday afternoon so I bet it comes Really quickly at peak hours!

Shortly after walking past that sign I walked into a real street sign with a pole and everything. Great.

Not Frosted Flakes, Frosties. Apparently they go for nearly 10USD here.. yikes.

Rasputin vodka! See that red thing on the right? That was the cashier. Yep.. I took a picture of the liquor behind the cashier cause it said Rasputin on it. A little embarrassing, but hey.

Just made pasta for dinner… Probably the cheapest option. Was going to go for a sandwich but realized that everything here is a sandwich more or less and that I’d get sick of them Really fast if I even ate them at home hahaha.

I do, indeed, travel.

Toronto: Friday 515pm

Getting ready to leave my house and waiting for my mom to fuss her way out of the door. Might as well snap a few pics with the brand spankin’ new camera (thanks mom!) Early birthday present from mother dearest who shudders at the cost of shipping to Denmark (understandably.)

Toronto: Friday 7pm

I should be boarding the plane soon and it should depart within the half hour. Alas, a delay! but British Airways claims that I’ll still arrive at the same time, and who am I to question their lovely Brit accents? No, seriously, all of the staff are from across the pond even in the Canadian terminal. I guess they are exporting their accent everywhere to look more British haha. Conspicuously knitting a hat and taking up three seats.. I have a lot of stuff, fellow Gate C35ers, I’m studying abroad. Forgive? Actually I’m pretty proud only one of my bags is overweight. Anyway, I hope to complete this hat prior to landing. I should be able to do it if I don’t snooze I’m easily half done so I don’t really have an excuse. I can hear some voices over the intercom but my music’s too loud to make out the words, but I don’t see a mass exodus so I should be ok. Blogging on the phone is surprisingly far easier than I anticipated, and I think I prefer it to the computer cause I can pull this out whenever and when I’m on the laptop I’m too distracted by everything else. Plus telling the story in retrospect makes me leave out a lot of things (which is a good thing I suppose since I tend to be long winded. Oh well!) The only annoying thing is that the I’s don’t automatically capitalize but I think I can deal. I’m gonna have thumbs of steal by the end of this if I don’t already. A lot of people ask me why I don’t get a phone with qwerty keyboard, but I simply don’t see the need. I like my huge spacious buttons that know exactly what I’m trying to write. I can’t use an iPhone or Blackberry because my tiny fingers can’t accurately pinpoint the desired key! (I pity those with chubby fingers. Or maybe I just have Really bad aim. Cue joke about my athletic incompetencies.) Okay anyway.. I think I shall return to my knitting now.

Knitting a hat -- hands down most satisfying/easiest knit.

Toronto: Friday 830PM

Wow I booked it so fast I lost both my hair ties in the process and I am now spluttering pathetically in my seat. If I have to pay for overpriced Danish hair elastics because I just happened to run out I will be very very aggravated. Before I continue this any further – omg British Airways planes have an upstairs compartment?! What?! I spot stairs!!! Would so snap a picture but I feel the people behind would Not be impressed. Anyhow.. The story from the beginning. So you know how I wrote c35ers? So.. I was actually sitting at gate 25. WHOOPS! Didn’t realize until 15 minutes before takeoff time and freaked out and ran for it. Props to my dear Heys luggage for keeping up without skipping. The wheels are truly remarkable cause they glided perfectly, even if my idea of running is a speed-waddle for most (I mean, even for normal speed walking most rolling has the occasional hiccup. Proud to say no such thing happened today!) Phew. Anyway.. Time to jet! I hope no one mistakes my winded hacking cough for avian flu when I go through customs later, haha. Note to self: exercise has real life applications. Like.. Catching flights if you’re moronic like yours truly. Time to depart! Will update soon because I am lonely and friendless and consequently bored.

I saw my neighbour's neighbour on the plane double fisting these awesome cute Coke cans. Naturally I had to insist on taking a picture of them (I seriously considered ordering a Coke just to get those but I decided that my dislike for carbonated beverages trumped my need to take a picture.) Still got the picture anyway! Thanks neighbour's neighbour!

London: 1030am local time, 530am in Toronto

Narrowly avoided being run over by one of those airport buggy/shuttles transporting an elderly couple. What’s the hurry? I saw them being driven back across the airport with the driver honking merrily (clearly, not really in a hurry.) Oh well, can’t fault people for having fun at work. Whenever I talk about the ridiculous accidents or close shaves I have in a day I sound like I’m exaggerating but it was honestly pretty darn close (and having been backed into by an SUV I feel I am an authority on motor vehicle-pedestrian altercations.) Anyway, I’ve been in London Heathrow airport for four hours. It’s a very pleasant and modern airport. I thoroughly explored floors 2 and 3 and entered nearly all the shops.

Heathrow map is so cool! Colour-coded fluorescent plastic marks each store.

The duty-free Harrod’s folks are very very aggressive.. I hate aggressive sales staff. That’s the only con I can think of so far. Food here is pretty expensive but I got a prepackaged set of three sandwiches for 3 pounds which is most reasonable imo and a face wash for 1.5 pounds which is a steal.

Super glam lunch purchased from Boots. Prepackaged sandwiches! Prawn mayo, chicken cucumber, BLT. Delish.

I find it funny that Bourjois is a drugstore brand here and is priced as such even though it is manufactured by Chanel (I think.) To be fair, drugstore products are marked up here, but so is everything else, so I guess luxury products here are relatively more accessible here (i.e. double drugstore versus triple)? Just a hypothesis.. Anyway. Also purchased assam tea it looks delicious and strong and the package recommends adding milk which sounds right up my alley. I’m glad I got that instead of getting an overpriced glass of orange juice and hanging around loner style in a random restaurant. I should probably get used to sitting around alone in restaurants and cafes sooner rather than later though if I keep moving around! On a wholly unrelated note, the British Airways flight crew is the most friendly I have ever experienced. Time to fly to Copenhagen.. Quite, quite excited!

I am the über tourist. So I insisted on taking a picture of the extremely spacious toilet stall. Plus, check out the toilet bowl! Pretty nifty.
