Don’t worry, I’m still alive!

Well yesterday we got daylight savings but it is proving to be rather useless i Danmark because the sun freakin sets at 5pm now because it’s winter! Today it was all rainy and stuff and it is making me very fatigued.. 😦 I haven’t felt particularly awake once all day and I am sleepy and it is only 11pm! All I did today really was eat and nap lol. In excellent news, I have mastered making soy sauce chicken and ginger-scallion sauce. It is so good there is none left and I can’t take pictures! Funnily, the soy sauce mixture used to boil the chicken has become soy sauce jello because the gelatin from boiling the chicken has gelatinized the mixture!

This weekend I went out twice (:O!) and also was a bit of a nerd (:O!!) because my friend has the quant textbook but he couldn’t use it because he was studying for another exam which meant that I could use it! Hoohah! After laying hands upon this mythical item and taking a look through and doing some practice problems I feel a lot better about this class, lol.

Anyway, on to the good stuff.. pictures! Of course on Thursday we went to Kulorbar as always. This time wasn’t as good because the DJ was different 😦 But still good for a clubbing experience. Oh, and this time I insisted upon snapping a picture each time we got a beer so we’d know for certain precisely how many were consumed! (Last time we had a minor argument between 5 and 6 hahaha.)

Mittens!

Mittens!! It was cold out, so we all wore gloves or mittens πŸ™‚

My mittens are eating my clutch πŸ™‚

First beer

This commences the beer drinking pictures! Each photo to follow is worth a beer.. I am not going to caption each, that is just silly!

Eighth

Eighth beer, ladies and gents! Don't worry, that's all, haha.

Also, the next morning I discovered a bruise that I got from walking into my chair too many times 😦 (No, not because I was drunk! The chair just is right at kneecap level so it kind of shades in my kneecap lol.)

The next day (Friday) was the day of the Halloween party. I was really excited, but I shouldn’t have been, haha. We didn’t like Underbar at all! The music sucked, but everyone else seemed to have had a really good time! Well, maybe they were piss drunk, lol. Oh, and some drunk ho shoved me off the platform and so I sprained my ankle, boo 😦 Also I have discovered that pregaming with a bottle of champagne goes down much easier than alternate methods, haha.

Gaga

I went as Lady Gaga! That was the only blonde wig I could find, and it had no bangs or anything, so I had to cut them in, and the hair was waaaaay too long and scraggly, so I had to cut that too. All the wigs here are brown or black here because everyone already is blonde!

In character

Yeah we decided to pose in character and I was at a loss for what to do. Oh, and we swapped sides so you could see my lightning bolt πŸ™‚

Inside

Inside. I yanked off the wig as soon as I got there lol I hate those blasted things! So my hair is all gross and demented from hanging out under it, hahaha.

Jelly belly

Most. Adorable. Costume. Ever.

Bruise

Bruise still quite purple on Sunday despite application of bruise cream that apparently is supposed to do stuff with your blood vessels. Oh well. Oh, and look, a textbook!!! Aren't you proud? Not mine though, haha.

I opted against going on the booze cruise this weekend because I don’t think it is worth the expense but I am considering going to Berlin. What should I doooo? I am going to London and the Canary Islands next weekend.. it will be a nice respite from the cold weather here.. V and I are going to study on the beach! Woo! (… Plus the ticket was just really cheap, haha.) Other things to look forward to this week: all you can eat ribs round 2, and maybe power hour (I have never tried this before, it scares me a little.. but only a little. We shall see!)

Alright.. that is all that is going on in my life. πŸ™‚

I am a rice bandit

Whenever I cook rice on the stove (except for that one time where I was heavily under the influence and yet inexplicably made perfect rice that was fluffed up nicely and didn’t stick *at all* to the pot — not one grain!!! *So* easy to clean up the next morning…) it’s always a pain in the butt to clean up because it sticks to the bottom of the pan and creates a rice cracker type thing. The first time I was really stupid and tried to soak and scrub it off (the way you do with normal food stains and such) but that is a mistake! I have since realized that it’s much easier to just let it dry up (especially cause rice shrinks and pulls away when it dries) and to break out the “cracker” (my weapon of choice: a spatula to tap all over the surface until it shatters like glass and the fragments pop out.)

Well. This particular “cracker” was in such good shape of course I had to do something with it in preparation for Halloween! Oh, and before you judge me for being quite possibly the lamest person you know, I’d like to remind you that you are associating yourself with me after all so you are nearly as lame as I am! HA!

Kinder Milk Slice?! Omg.. it looked so good but I had no idea what it was. It was in the refrigerated section. Ideas, anyone? Haha.

Good ol’ Sundays

… where nothing is open except for small shops. So I assumed the “Chinatown” shops (yes, all two of them!) were open, but alas. They were not. Nevertheless, the Thai shops had all the stuff I needed for my dumplings (including wrappers = so much time saved!!) except — EXCEPT — they don’t carry Lee Kum Kee Chiu Chow Chili Oil!!! Nooooo!! They carry Lee Kum Kee other sauces (e.g. oyster, Peking duck, etc.) and other brands of chili oil (subpar, obvs), but not the one I want. Sigh.

Handicap section on the bus has a nice bar you can grab onto. Handy dandy! Then people got on the bus and I felt bad for sitting in the handicap seat and hurriedly shuffled toward the back.

MUSE in Copenhagen!...Not that I'm seeing it, but I'm sure B would if she were here. I hope she sees this! Actually I don't think I ever gave her the blog URL lol. Oh well..

What the heck? Yeah I said that out loud.. then was embarrassed.. then realized Copenhagen is barren on Sundays so nobody heard me and it was all good. Then I whipped out my camera and kind of goggled at the horrendous number of chips on the surface already seeing as it's more or less brand new but then again I do have butterfingers and have been travelling extensively so clearly these signs of wear are just proof of lots of enthusiasm and love for the camera! .. I digress. Anyway, yes, I somehow managed to walk past the Air Canada office thingy in Copenhagen on my way back from Asian groceries. Random right? Kiiiiiind of like my life.

CHRISTMAS/SNOWMAN PRINT LAMBI TOILET PAPER!!! Dude, I saw this in Fakta and giggled aloud. Then I texted T about this and giggled aloud. Then I thought about it and giggled aloud. Etc. I'm pretty sure a part of my roommate is going to die inside. What self respecting male wipes his butt with snowmen? Just throwing it out there. But hey, it was my turn to buy the toilet paper, and this was way too good to pass up, so whatever. Bless him!

So.. Fakta only had ground beef and not pork but that's okay. MORE IMPORTANTLY, I just realized today I could get frozen mixed veggies (I got "wok" style veggies in the spirit of Asianness) and chop them up a little more and save lots of time and get way more variety! No more agonizing over the One kind of vegetable to throw into the dumplings (because I can't really afford to get multiples) and having to throw out half of the veggie *anyway* because there's too much for one person to consume and no space in my modest midget-fridge freezer. Plus, the tiny knife I use to literally cut everything just isn't big enough for some veggies (cough ... extra resilient cabbage.)

One (wo)man’s trash is another (wo)man’s treasure

Today I went to pay the Frederiksberg flea market a visit. I figured since I was going to markets in foreign cities.. I should check out our own! I feel really stupid for never visiting it before, it has a lot of great stuff for cheap! It runs every Saturday but next Saturday is the last one.. dangnabbit! I think I’m in love!

On a side note, why do they call them flea markets? What an unappealing name. Like Acne brand jeans… what were they thinking? The first time I read it I thought it was supposed to be ACME but.. alas.

I cleaned up my closet so it only felt appropriate that I play dressup in my own closet before embarking on my thrifty adventure! So here’s what I wore:

Wearing my new stuff from my trip! Tank - TRF by Zara, 4 Euro = 6 USD. I think this is a fabulous replacement for my favourite Kenzie beater that I lost three years ago. I also got this in forest green. A lot of beaters tend to make me look really fat but this one minimizes it a little. Yay! And is soft and comfy to boot. Plus the fabric looks kinda waffly even though it's ribbed. Sequin belt from Primark, 1 GBP = 1.6 USD. LOVE!!! Super stretchy and not tight/squeezy at all, and absolutely covered in sequins. I'm pretty sure I couldn't buy the same amount of strung sequins wholesale for that price. Skirt with zipper detail from Primark for 2 pounds = 3.25 USD. It's a size too big but skirts are nice and forgiving, and it's super cheap and cheery. Sweater is one of my favourites from Parasuco that my mom got for me, and I'm also wearing dark gray tights and black boots. Because you care.

Aww.. Copenhagen's so cute. This is part of the area where people had their stuff up. (Actually it's just in a parking lot lol.)

I found this box of naked dolls lying out in the sun really creepy. But snap-worthy. Ugh, dolls. There is a reason why I didn't play with them as a kid -- they're weird!

One of the most awesome sweaters I've seen in a long ime. Psychedelic black and white with black and white vertical triangle things. I'm pinching it at the back because it's got that huge vintage cut where the armpit hangs like a foot long lol. 45 DKK = 9 USD.

BABY GOT BACK.. not. So I got this awesome green and blue plaid skirt but it's a bit too small (it's high waisted and attempts to squeeze my tummy into a size it cannot possibly be) so I need to get it tailored. For now.. I will just cover it with a shirt. But as you can see.. the zip doesn't *really* go all the way hahaha. (Hey man, I couldn't try it on ok!) In any case, it was an absolute steal -- 10 DKK = 5 USD. Fully lined and made i Danmark!

The amazing fabric. Usually when people mix green and blue in plaid it's a foresty green with a navy blue.. this one was super basic green-green and royal blue. Like honestly, the most basic primary colours you could get clashing together in plaid. Ah-mazing!

BRAND NEW WITH TAGS tunic top in a nice forest green (holy bajeez, I feel like I've typed the words "forest green" like ten times already.. what is with this green fixation). The print is kind of like a checkerboard: one "colour" is skinny diagonal black stripes, the other "colour" is blank except with a small gridded black square in the very middle. Cool puffy sleeves: check. Covers my butt: check. Dark colour: check. Kulorbar-able: check! 30 DKK = 6 USD. Also, check out that belt!!! It's the most amazing belt but unfortunately way too big for me, but I'm wearing it anyway. It's made up of three pieces, the middle piece is repeated at the top and bottom, but where it fastens, only the middle piece is present. Each piece is made of interlocking pieces of leather that look like pop can tabs. They are connected with a piece of leather that all three pieces hook on to, but only the middle piece continues on, and the leather thing tapers. It's kind of hard to explain but it looks really cool in person! Serious. 20 DKK = 4 USD.

The skirt was a size too big but it was kind of screaming my name. The skirt is an aubergine-y eggplanty burnt purple with the most ridiculous tomato-red paisley owl print. And it has pockets!!! Kind of perfect for summer. It is so cheery and ridiculous at the same time! 40 DKK = 8 USD.

Oh, and why all this photo taking clothes updating etc. you ask? Because in my post-trip boredom I have been blog surfing and have become acutely aware of my unstylishness. Not that I think my clothes are hids or anything, it’s just not very interesting. I think I really need to go thrift shopping when I go back to Toronto and just not tell my mom it’s thrifted because she’s afraid of germs.

eurotrippin’

Alright.. I’m back. So… it’s been a long trip and I don’t even know where to begin! So.. I’ll start with Riga, since it’s freshest in my mind. I was only there from 6:30PM onwards, and because it was so stormy, it was really dark out too. (Not to mention FREEZING! Literally! Below zero!) The plane had so much turbulence on the way down that people clapped when we landed. It was a little scary, not gonna lie, and I have to admit I briefly toyed with the idea of just not leaving the airport because the weather seriously sucked balls outside (and who was I to argue with the weather in my sweater and jeans?) It was kind of hilarious because as soon as we touched down everyone on the plane pulled out massive knee-length parkas and I had .. well, nothing. And these people were Latvian so they were used to the bitter cold! I’d just returned from Madrid/Rome where it’s warm! Oh well. Latvia seems to be all cute and charming like Copenhagen except the shops don’t close til 9 and everything is super super cheap (for Europe anyway!) I’d say prices were comparable to or less than those in the US, which is pretty amazing seeing as I have grown accustomed to 4-dollar-hotdogs and such. Also, people in Riga are so sweet and adorable. I took the airport shuttle and it picks people up from hotels. I was in Riga from 6:30PM until my flight the next morning at 7AM, but since I’m poor/broke/both, I couldn’t exactly afford a hotel. So… I decided to take the airport shuttle back to the airport at 10-ish. Of course, all I had was my sweater so I sure as heck wasn’t going to stand outside popsicle-stylez waiting for a potentially-late shuttle bus, so I waited in the safety of the lobby. The people there were super helpful even though I obviously didn’t pay for their services, and the concierge watched for the shuttle for me (bless him!) He saw the shuttle and was like go go go! and I ran out of there but by then the shuttle already pulled away! So.. what did they do? These people called the shuttle company and told them to come back!!! May I repeat.. I didn’t have a hotel room or anything. I didn’t pay for their services. I was bumming in their hotel lobby. So.. shameless plug for Hotel Riga and Ilya and the other dude! THANK YOU!!!! The shuttle bus came back and it was all good. …I feel like I’m skipping Β a lot of parts of my jaunt into Riga. I walked around some, shopped some, and ate dinner.

Will update with photos and such after I finish with finicky ol’ Facebook.

What I first saw upon exiting the airport. Not promising, not gonna lie. Dark, rainy, cold.

LOWDOWN ON RIGA FOR SINGLE FEMALE TRAVELLERS: (Writing this because… when I google “single female tourist” I get singles ads. So *not* what I’m looking for.)

1. Safety – A: The streets aren’t dead empty but they’re not crowded either, everyone is very helpful and friendly. I asked around and all the locals agree it is very safe. In fact, the woman at the counter assumed I’d be wandering around alone until 1AM and was like, hmm, maybe you should taxi it back to the airport.. Don’t buy a two-way, I don’t want to cheat you out of your money.. And I was like, dude, I am most certainly not wandering around alone in a completely foreign city by myself until 1AM! (My fears were unwarranted, it really *is* that safe.)

2. Ease of navigation – A: The old town is small and pretty easy to get through with a map, and nearly everyone speaks some English anyway (UNLIKE Madrid.)

3. Cost – A: Super reasonable for Europe.

4. Excitement – B: I saw it in the dark. It was cute, but I didn’t see much. Again, it was dark, so I don’t actually know.

5. Airport – C: Clean, cute, pretty, BUT no internet facilities and is completely barren at night! Very safe, but I feel better seeing other people around… Wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to schlep it here again but would do it again because it’s safe and clean. But cold. I’d bring a jacket. And something to do.

hello from madrid!

just got into madrid Early this morning and have seriously walked my butt off after one hour of sleep last night (aka on the plane.) lots of pics.. But uploading’s kinda impossible here so i’ll do it when i get home. I’m at my first hostel ever and it’s pretty nice! Ok.. So so tired and in bed.. Nap time!

I want Kulorkortet!

So Kulorbar has a special card called Kulorkortet (which means the colour card.. kulor bar means colour bar.. Danish is a weird language, if you want to put a definite article *i.e. THE kulor card* you need to write the definite article at the end *hence kulorkortET* but the definite article is also gender based so the banana is bananER and also plural based so the bananas is bananERNE) and it makes the lines shorter and stuff so I applied for one and it should be coming in the mail APPARENTLY sometime in the next two months (doh.) Oh well, I hope it comes quicker. And it’s free, so no harm, no foul. Wow, my sentences are really, really long, I’m surprised people understand what I say.

Anyway. So I got all these messages from my friend’s FB acct cause he got 419-hacked, and now I’m kind of paranoid to use an internet cafe, but I don’t know what I’ll do if I don’t check my Gmail for a week..?! Decisions, decisions.. eek.

We went to Kulor bar on Thursday and something in the beer wasn’t right that night, I swear. I was a little tipsy and I had 5 or 6 beers only (to be fair, we killed the first two beers in ten minutes, and the next two beers in thirty minutes, and the fifth beer i had in the twenty minutes after that. And the sixth beer I had a while later, but basically I had five beers in an hour. Also note the increasing times because I was getting so freakin full lol.) And one of my beers was *really* dark and gross looking/tasting/yeasty :/ and pretty much everyone was hammered. Tally: friend lost a phone, friend puked, friend was really really drunk, friend disappeared..??? Yep. Next morning ran into hallmate P and she swears there was something in the beer because she was hungover and she only had one beer. And I’m preeeeetty sure I heard roommate retching in the toilet the next morning also and I was laughing so hard I had to run to T’s room and hide so he wouldn’t hear me laughing because I felt kinda bad for being horrible but I still find it funny that I’m not the only one who pukes the morning after (NOT THAT I HAVE YET!, which is another reason why it’s so funny. He beat me to it! Haha!) T, C, SB, and I all went home together, and all in all we had a great night and I’m kind of hoping it’s going to be a weekly tradition. We were hungry when we got home so we fattied on two pans of fries (fries were four bags for $10.. best investment ever.. even now we are really upset we didn’t discover them earlier) and hardboiled eggs with soy sauce muahahaha. Every time we go to Kulor Bar we get home so late (like 5ish) so we didn’t sleep til 6! Before C left we made plans to meet the next morning for lunch because well, my mind’s on the food and food’s on my mind hee. One thing I love about good ol’ CPH is that the clubs are pretty full already pretty early (like at 1130 there is a half-hour line) and that they don’t close until really late (we leave at 4, 4:30 and there are still people there) so we’re getting our money’s worth! Might as well, since I really only go out once a week usually. I’m poor! And lazy! So yeah. The next day we went for the durum shawarma with chilli (which I adore..) and it’s huge! Like a foot long! (That’s not what she said.) But I’m pretty sure I have waxed poetic about my love for that place already. Then we grabbed some ice cream from my favourite ice cream parlour (I got raspberry sorbet (hindbaer, I think it’s raspberry), T got chocolate (kakao) and tiramisu, and C got pear (paere).) Soooo good. They make the flavours so freaking flavourful and it’s all homemade and … man! Somehow they make the sorbet insanely creamy as well, and while I’m not a big fan of creamy things I really have to say it’s amazing. Then we walked it off at Frederiksberg park where I saw the elephant enclosure from the zoo!!! The elephants kept mooning us though, so.. T and I broke out into Sir Mix-A-Lot. It felt appropriate. That song is always going to remind me of CPH. Actually, we made a list of Copenhagen-specific songs:

1. I Gotta Feeling – BEP

2. Baby Got Back – Sir Mix-A-Lot

3. Random No Scrubs/I’m Yours mix that they play every Thursday at Kulor Bar. It’s a little weird but we’ve gotten quite fond of it.

Not a Copenhagen theme song because we’re so sick of hearing it but will remind us of CPH nonetheless: Pitbull – Calle Ocho.

I’m watching so much X-Files now after I was told it was a lot like Fringe. I really like it, I can see that the quality isn’t as good because it’s clearly dated, but I like the acting/actors/characters better. That said, I don’t necessarily like the show better because I like them both a lot. X-Files is nowhere near as gruesome but somehow it is just as eerie or maybe even more so. I think for Fringe I just expect it to be so gross that things are never really a surprise. …Well that was a whole lot of nothing haha.

Oh and reminds me of what happened last night (sigh) I don’t want to repeat it so I’ll just c/p what I wrote on MSN:

reminds me

We got there early (at 10:30) and got an extra half hour of all-you-can-beer for 20kr ($4). A fab bonus was that it was pretty empty so we could chat and chill with our beers in peace! Well worth it, and there was no line, so we're gonna do it again I think.

Part of the park.. The park is very big and right behind where I live so it's right in the city. CPH has a lot of parks dispersed throughout it, this is one of the bigger and nicer ones. Look at the grass it's so .. clean and perfect. Kind of like CPH.

From another angle.. It's really hard to see, sorry, I couldn't actually see the picture I was taking because the sun was so bright! As.. I'm sure you can tell from this pic, haha. The sunniness belies the true temperature though, it was cold!!!

Random purple flowers littered on the ground.. I think they're weeds, but I find them beautiful. I find dandelions beautiful too, I don't know why they're weeds!
